Prior to joining Newmeyer Dillion, Dutch served in the Marine Corps in a variety of legal and non-legal roles during his 24 year career, culminating as the Commanding Officer of the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California.

As a Judge Advocate in the United States Marine Corps he served at the Pentagon as the Director of the Trial Counsel Assistance Program, Head of the Marine Corps Victim and Witness Assistance Program, and the Co-Chair of the Legal Doctrine Working Group. While assigned in the fleet Marine Corps, he served as a Senior Defense Counsel, Senior Prosecutor, Special Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii, and the Base Magistrate for Marine Corps Bases Hawaii. In total, Dutch prosecuted or defended more than 600 civilians and military service members, including those charged with premeditated murder, sexual assault, aggravated assault, drug distribution, and larceny. Dutch deployed with the Third Marine Regiment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2009) and as a Defense Attorney to Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2006).

Additionally, Dutch has been previously accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs to assist veterans in the claims process.
